Effective Hammertoe Treatment - Phoenix, AZ

Relieve Hammertoe Pain and Curl

Hammertoes usually aren’t serious but can cause major pain if left untreated.  There are nearly 200,000 cases each year in the US making this foot condition fairly common.  Hammertoes are actually foot deformities, which are caused by an imbalance in various ligaments, tendons, or muscles and which fail to keep the toe straight.

As you probably notice, a hammertoe as an abnormal bend in the middle joint of the toe.  The middle joint is then pushed upwards and often rubs up against the top of a person’s shoes causing discomfort.  The goal of hammertoe treatment is often to remove and relieve the pain and pressure of a hammertoe.  In severe cases, surgery may be the best way to get relief.

Again, the causes of a hammertoe are the imbalance of the toe muscles but trauma and certain shoes can contribute to the development of hammertoes.  Shoes like high heels that are restrictive and tight like high heels provide the pressure and stress to create hammertoes.

Dr. Michael Stegman and Dr. John Erotas have treated hammertoes for over two decades in Phoenix, AZ.  Changing your footwear is one of the best ways to ensure that the hammertoes stop curling.  By applying comfortable roomy shoes and custom-made orthotics, your toes are protected during everyday traveling.

Change Your Footwear

Custom made orthotics specifically fit your feet only and are designed to match your walking pattern.  Many of the inserts that come in store-bought shoes are made of cheap materials and actually cause harm to the feet while a person walks.  Also, certain stretching and strengthening exercises can help decrease the stiffness of a hammertoe and relieve some of it’s curl.

If you are experiencing any pain, it is time to see a podiatrist at the American Foot and Ankle Specialists.  Hammertoes can develop corns and calluses and these will be treated during your office visit.  Pads that cover your corns and hammertoes may also help to relieve some of the pressure placed on the toe.

Hammertoes can either be rigid or flexible.  The hammertoe that is still flexible is in the developmental stage and can be treated much more easily.  If you begin to notice hammertoes, it may be beneficial to seek out treatment for this reason before rigid hammertoes cause permanent joint misalignment and immobility.

Everyday, we see patients with hammertoes and help people find relief.  Come into our Sun City podiatry office or our Scottsdale podiatry office for an office visit.
