Boy can bunions be painful! This painful bump pushing out on the side of your big toe causing irritation, swelling, redness, and soreness constantly reminds you that you are in pain and need to fix this problem.
The thing to do when you have this problem is to see a podiatrist that can diagnose the severity of your bunion and then provide the correct type of treatment. The reason that it is important to get treatment right away is because the bunion, with more and more pressure, can not only cause more irritation and pain but also develop other painful foot conditions like bursitis, hammertoes, and metatarsalgia (pain and inflammation in the balls of your feet).
Bunions are caused when the big toe pushes into the other toes and causes the big toe joint to push outwards. When you wear tight shoes, the bump rubs against the shoe with pressure causing irritation, soreness, and pain.
The causes of bunions can be heredity, ill-fitting shoes, and arthritis. As both a Sun City foot doctor and a Scottsdale foot doctor, I recommend that if you have discovered a bunion, immediately switch to more comfortable shoes to relieve pressure and discomfort from the bunion.
Seeing a Sun City podiatrist or a Scottsdale podiatrist at one of our locations is important to diagnose the bunion and treat it. Call 480-483-9000 and schedule an appointment today!
You may want to prepare a list of questions for the podiatrist that address your concerns. The first step at either our Sun City Podiatry or Scottsdale Podiatry office is to provide and recommend conservative treatments that will relieve discomfort.
Conservative treatments may include changing your shoes and wearing more comfortable shoes. Also, padding and ice can be used to alleviate the pain of a bunion. Shoe inserts or orthotics will help make walking more comfortable as well. Also, ice is always helpful to decrease swelling and thereby, reducing the size of the bunion and the amount of pressure put on it.

If these conservative treatments do not relieve discomfort, you may need surgery, which helps to correct the position of the big toe. This is something that will be discussed with your podiatrist.
