How To Recover From An Ankle Sprain/Injury

Ankle Sprain Treatment

During your ankle injury, it is crucial to follow the correct steps to recover.  One reason to follow precise podiatry treatment is that an ankle sprain easily re-rolls if not properly cared for.  At the American Foot and Ankle Specialists, our podiatrists will not only help you heal your ankle but also show you how to keep it healthy long after the ankle damage heals.  The worst thing is to spend weeks healing your ankle only to roll it again and have to spend many more weeks in recovery.

The reason why sprained ankles easily twist is because they are weak and cannot support the full weight and balance of the body.  This is why care podiatry treatment and care is needed to protect the ankle.

Steps To Ankle Recovery

After your ankle sprain, there are a couple things you should do immediately.  Firstly, get off of your ankle, lie down, elevate your foot, and ice the ankle.  Ice your ankle at least three times per day for the first week because this will drastically reduce the inflammation which decreases pain and increases your ankle’s ability to heal.

If you are experiencing tremendous pain, use crutches for the first few days until you can walk with an ankle brace without pain.  Ankle brace’s are also key when recovering from a sprain.  An ankle brace restricts the movements of your ankle making it nearly impossible to further damage your ankle.

When you come in for your appointment with a podiatrist, one of the first things that we will do is take an ankle x-ray.  Here, we will determine that your ankle is not fractured and being able to properly diagnose the severity of the injury goes a long way toward applying the treatment you need to recover.

Once your ankle is almost healed, it is vital to apply some re-strengthening exercises.  Like I mentioned previously, the ankle is extremely weak after a sprain and any little misstep can cause the ankle to roll again.  Strengthening your ankle strengthens the surrounding muscles so your foot can support your weight.  This way you will be able to engage safely in any activity you wish. Patients that fail to re-strengthen the ankle may roll their ankle many times before it actually heals.

Our Scottsdale podiatry and Sun City podiatry office locations can help you to find the treatment you need to heal and ankle sprain.  The podiatrists at the American Foot and Ankle Specialists have treated ankle sprains for over twenty years and we guarantee that your ankle will heal without life-long symptoms after our guided podiatry treatments.
