If heel pain is preventing you from walking, it is time to see the Sun City podiatrist! Although heel pain is extremely common, it is crucial to make an appointment with your Sun City foot doctor in order to eliminate this painful foot condition before it worsens and becomes a major problem. Heel pain left untreated can take many months to get better.
Heel pain is usually not complicated. It is just a matter of figuring out exactly what is the problem and then providing the right treatment for it. One thing is certain with all heel pain; it is important to take as much pressure and stress off of the foot as possible in order to give it a better chance at recovery. This definitely means wearing comfortable shoes and customized orthotics and icing and resting your feet when possible. If you are feeling pain, try to get off your feet as quickly as possible. The more chance you give it to rest, the less pain you will feel on a daily basis. Let me share with you various common heel issues.
One common foot condition is called Plantar Fasciitis. There is a plantar fascia tendon that runs underneath the arch of your foot to the heel. Sometimes this tendon can be overused and when this happens, it swells and becomes very painful. Unless the plantar fascia is strained, which we will determine at our office, this type of injury is easily fixed after several weeks of rest, ice, correct shoes, and customized orthotics. Taking a break from exercises that strain your feet will also be helpful. Perhaps, try swimming!
Another common heel problem is called haglund’s deformity, also known as retrocalcaneal bursitis. It can be seen as a painful small bump on the bottom of one’s heel. When pressure is put on this bump, one may experience intense pain and tenderness. Check for this small bump, it is a good indicator if you have haglund’s deformity. Your podiatrist will then go over a treatment plan for you to alleviate this heel pain and eliminate the painful bump.
Lastly, common with heel pain is getting bone spur. The bone spur can be seen on a x-ray. When going into the Sun City podiatry office, your foot doctor will give you an x-ray to check for a fracture or a bone spur. This is important to diagnose the issue correctly. A heel spur is a calcium deposit on the underside of the heel bone. If you have heel pain that persists for more than one month, please consult a podiatrist.
